Taupo Activities

There is so much to do around Taupō and you will never be short of activities to fill your day. If you are just wanting to chill out, there are wonderful cafes around the town and waterfront. Or you can just soak up the summer sun at the lake or in winter, warm up at one of several hot mineral pools around the town and surrounding areas.

Here are just a few ideas to get you in the holiday planning mood. All our rooms have information folders with brochures and details on local activities and amenities.

Doughboats,  flyboarding, parasailing, kayaking, and sailing are just some of the activities that can be experienced on Lake Taupō. Within easy travelling distance of Taupō there is the Rapids Jet and the Huka Falls Jet or for a more sedate pace, there is the Huka Falls Cruise. For an adrenaline-pumping experience, travel to Turangi for white water rafting.

Flyboarding on Lake Taupō.
You can access this activity at Two Mile Bay.
Doughboats are a relatively new Taupō attraction.

For boat fishing from Turangi we recommend Bill Grace, a fishing guide with over 40 years' experience of fishing on Lake Taupō. Bill also takes people fly fishing on the Tongariro River.

For boat fishing from Taupō we recommend Taupo Lake Adventures. The skipper is Nick Reed.

In the air

We recommend Taupō Tandem Skydiving for world-class parachuting. There are also scenic helicopter and float plane rides.

Geothermal attractions

Spectacular sites around the area include Wai-O-Tapu, Wairakei Terraces, Craters of the Moon, Orakei Korako, Wairakei Natural Thermal Valley and Waimangu Volcanic Valley.

Craters of the Moon is about ten minutes' drive from Acacia Heights Gardens, and Orakei Korako is less than 30 minutes' drive away.

Walking and hiking

Walk along the lakefront with numerous tracks along the bays and through the bush, up to the magnificent Huka Falls and along the might Waikato river. The Tongariro Alpine Crossing is a must do for active hikers, around 70 minutes' drive away.

Bike trails

Mountain bike around Craters of the Moon, try out all or part of the Great Lake Trail, ride along the Waikato River on the Huka Trail, there are loads of options to suit all riders. Don’t have a bike? – just hire one.

Arts and Crafts

See Lava Glass and watch the fascinating glass blowing artists at work. Alternatively, turn right out of our driveway, go to the end of Acacia Heights Drive and at the end, turn right. Drive up the hill one kilometre until you come to L'Arte which is a cafe and art gallery with a good variety of art and craft works for sale.

When you leave L'Arte, turn left into Mapara Road and drive about 2 kilometres until you come to Tukairangi Road. Turn right and drive 600 meters until you come to Tukairangi Gallery on the left, a pottery owned by Ross and Annie Palmer, a formidable team of potters.

Visit the Botanical gardens at Waipahihi Botanical Reserve.

Snow sports

Taupo is a great base to stay while you wait for the perfect day for your ski trip with Mount Ruapehu ski-fields – Whakapapa, Turoa and Tukino within easy reach. Best time July to September. The Sky Waka is a wonderful year-round option for people wanting to experience a volcanic alpine environment on the North Island's highest mountain.
