Taupo Central

We often think of Taupō as being central within the North Island but the South Island is also so accessible from here.

Split apple rock, Tasman Bay

We are only an hour from Rotorua, two hours from Tauranga or Hamilton, three and a half hours from Auckland, four hours from New Plymouth and five hours from Wellington.

But it is only a 30 minute flight from here to Auckland and one-and-a-half hours from there to Nelson.

I recently flew to Nelson from Taupo. I left from here just after 9 am and was in Nelson by 1:30 pm. It was only another hour from there to Marahau at the entrance to the Abel Tasman National Park.

Our daughter Laura and I spent some time tramping and bike riding in Tasman Bay and then headed for St Arnaud near Lake Rotoiti where she completed the trek to the Angelus Hut.

We then headed for Blenheim in Marlborough for some wine tasting. We visited seven vineyards (Rock Ferry. Forrest Estate, Hunters, No 1, Framingham, Hans Herzog and Alan Scott). After I had left to fly back to Taupo, she visited two more, Clos Henri and Cloudy Bay. What a treat!

Her company was wonderful and it was a good chance to catch up.
